As a WordPress developer

If you’re teaching yourself WordPress development should you specialize in an area like front-end or back-end? As you’re learning a really broad topic like development or WordPress development it might seem like you should know a lot of it, you might want to research a lot of areas but.

I want to talk to you about why you should pick a pretty small area and really specialize in it I’m at a hotel called Hotel Parque Mexico, it has a nice bar here just grabbing a drink after working on Thursday and I have an idea for you that I think can help you save a lot of time as you’re learning development.

A lot of times engineers will talk about having a t-shaped skill set meaning that you’re really strong in one area you have the upper part of the t and then you have a good baseline in the rest of the areas, your baseline might be knowing the back end, knowing Git, knowing the fundamentals of how the browser works and how the web works and then the upper part of the team might be front-end development or CSS.

I think if you’re working in WordPress development teaching yourself this you should try to learn either front-end or back-end development part of the reason for this t-shaped skill set when you’re learning is that it’s best to get in a job.

Now you’ll learn a lot quicker once you’re in a job and specializing in the area will get you to the job quicker. I think For example when I started my job at XWP when I was developing it was mainly front-ends you might think well what if I don’t really know a specific area enough that’s gonna be a problem if you have the base of the team you should be able to upskill in a certain area.

Like if you’re a back-end or you should still understand JavaScript it doesn’t mean you’re going to be up on the latest developments and like React and all the frameworks although it definitely wouldn’t hurt if you’re later in your career but it means you have a basis in it and you can upskill in that if you need to but if you’re teaching yourself you really don’t have enough time I think to be a true full-stack developer and it’s not gonna be too credible if you only have.

Let’s say six months a year of experience saying you’re a full dev at XWP there are several full stack developers I’m not one of them but it’s a later career thing it’s I think kind of like saying you’re a senior engineer it’s not something that’s gonna be too credible early on in my opinion.

So people generally aren’t going to take it at face value even if you say you’re a full-stack dev for that reason I think it’s good to specialize in an area get really good at that and even if you find yourself in a job that you hired on as back-end developer and you need to upskill in JavaScript once you have the job you should be able to do that given that you have the good baseline in your t-shaped skill set this is going to save you time and it’s gonna help you get really good at a certain area.

That’s gonna be at a high enough skill level to get hired, you don’t want to be just at a lower skill level where you can sort of pass but not good enough to work on a team professionally, you want to have something that’s really defining of your skills and really is decisive that’s why I think you should specialize in an area whether it’s front-end or back-end.

I’m about to get back to it here and got a little bit of work or actually quite a bit of work tomorrow to finish up on hope you’re doing great and let me know if there are any concerns that you have that come up as you’re learning this and developing ideally a t-shaped skill set.
